Angel Shots – Many different bars and restaurants around the world are claiming responsibility for this new campaign. Angel Shots address the increased frequency of sexual violence. According to Britain’s National Crime Agency, there was a 450% increase in reported cases of rape between 2009 and 2014 occurring during the first face-to-face meeting of people who met online. This increase is being associated with dating apps growing in popularity. Bars and restaurants across the world have implemented a protection policy for women affectionately called “Angel Shots.” Devastating as it is that our society has lowered itself to needing protections like these, this innovative idea reportedly saved many not only bad dates, but potential rapes. Hard to prove as it is relying on a person’s first impression of another, it is comforting for a woman to know that if she wants helps, she knows where to turn and makes it extremely easy. These signs, normally posted in the women’s bathroom serve as frequent reminders. Order an angel shot with lime results in the police being called whereas over ice results in the bartender/server ordering a cab. Why though should this stop at women? Although women are much more commonly the victims of sexual assault and rape, men and transgender people are also targets whether by a male or a female. This protection should extend to other groups who need help with faith and trust they are seeking assistance. Hopefully they can rely on restaurants to provide this safeguard equally to all patrons regardless of gender and sexuality without judgement.
