2010 E.S. Meyers Memorial Lecture

The University of Queensland Medical Society is proud to present the 53rd E.S. Meyers Memorial Lecture - "Disasters, Rescue and Retrieval". This year's orator is Dr Paul Luckin, a world expert in Search and Rescue (SAR) and survivability. In his illustrated address, Dr Luckin will cover interesting rescues in Africa and Australia, and aspects of rescue in Australia today. He will touch on the resuscitation of our injured civilians in the Bali Bombings, and highlight some of the difficulties in retrieval of multiple casualties. His oration will include an account of his team's management of critically injured survivors of the Boxing Day Tsunami in Banda Aceh.

Dr Paul Luckin
 
Dr Paul Luckin is an anaesthetist in private practice in Brisbane, with a long term interest and involvement in Search and Rescue (SAR). He is consulted by the Australian Maritime Safety Authrority and Police Search and Rescue teams around the nation for real-time advice on survivability during SAR operations.
 
As a Commander in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve, Dr Luckin was in the Resuscitation and Retrieval Team for the first Bali Bombings. He has served in Bougainville, East Timor and later Timor Leste, Solomon Islands, and Afghanistan. Following the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, Dr Luckin was in the first Western medical team deployed to Banda Aceh, the worst damaged area with the highest casualty rate. The team was faced with an overwhelming load of severely injured patients, with minimal surgical and anaesthetic equipment.
 
Dr Luckin received the National Search and Rescue Award in 2006, for contributions to SAR in the Australian region over a 30 year period.

 
The E.S. Meyers Memorial Lecture
 
Errol Solomon Meyers was a pioneer in medical education and a founding father of the UQ School of Medicine. In honour of his contribution to medicine in Queensland, this annual public lecture was created as a forum for a person of distinction to present a perspective of endeavour and achievement.
