About the Orchestra

The Queensland Medical Orchestra (QMO) is an ensemble composed of doctors, medical students, health professionals and friends who come together to share their collective love of music. We provide opportunities for all interested members of the medical and wider musical community to perform orchestral music in a friendly, relaxed environment through a range of entertaining concerts performed in support of charity.

The orchestra is an initiative of The Ashintosh Foundation and supported by the University of Queensland Medical Society.

Membership

While the orchestra is targeted at doctors, medical students and health professionals, all are welcome to join. There are no membership fees or auditions. The only prerequisite is to be able to read music and attend rehearsals. Given the busy schedules of health professionals and university students, we don’t expect that every musician will be able to attend all rehearsals or perform in every concert. We aim to give as much notice as possible regarding concert dates and rehearsal schedules to aid advanced planning. We expect QMO members to have their own instrument(s) to perform in the orchestra, however, if you no longer have access to your instrument, please contact us and we will see what can be arranged.

Rehearsals

Before each concert we send out an email to everyone on our member register calling for participation in the upcoming concert. Included with the email is an online sign-up form to indicate your availability for rehearsals. The orchestra does not rehearse on a regular basis. Instead, we schedule approximately five to six rehearsals on weekends in the four to six weeks before each concert. Individual practice in between rehearsals is the key to ensuring the show comes together.

Rehearsals are typically held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm on Sunday afternoons at the Ralph Took Auditorium, Ferny Grove State High School, McGinn Rd, Ferny Grove. Afternoon Tea is provided. 100% attendance would be fantastic, however, in practice we ask for no more than two missed rehearsals from our members.
