Prizes & Scholarships Year II Prizes, Scholarships & Opportunities



The following list, taken from the School of Medicine Web Site, details the range of prizes and scholarships awarded by the University of Queensland for MBBS II students.
Year 2



Australian and New Zealand Society of Occupational Medicine Prize (#)
(Established in 1981 and maintained by an annual gift from the Queensland Branch of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Occupational Medicine.)
  1. A committee comprising the Head, School of Medicine, the Head, School of Population Health (or nominee) and the Chairman of the Queensland Branch of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Occupational Medicine.
  2. Year 2 MBBS students.
  3. Best essay (3000-5000) words on a topic related to occupational health submitted as the literature review in partial satisfaction of the program requirements.
  4. Recipient to provide a presentation to a meeting of the Queensland Branch of the Society when the prize will be awarded.
  5. $500.

R.N. Hammon Scholarships (#)
This scholarship is open to students of other Queensland universities. Preference is given to applicants in the fields of Medicine, Science, Engineering, Dentistry, Architecture, Agriculture and Veterinary Science.

  1. R.N. Hammon Selection Committee.
  2. Year 2 MBBS indigenous students.
  3. Scholarships tenable for the duration of the program, subject to satisfactory progress and annual review.
  4. Academic merit or technical excellence.
  5. Social and economic need.
  6. Applications to be made by end of March, direct to the UQ Prizes Officer (l.munro@admin.uq..edu.au).
  7. In these rules, 'indigenous students' means students who are eligible for an allowance under the Commonwealth Aboriginal Study Assistance Scheme, or who can otherwise demonstrate that they are of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island descent, regard themselves as Aborigines or Torres Strait Islanders, and are so considered by the community in which they live.

Harold and Mary Johnson Prize in Rheumatology
(Established in 1979 by a joint gift of $2,000 by Frank Johnson and Lindsay Newby to the Queensland Arthritis and Rheumatism Council to establish the Harold and Mary Johnson Memorial Fund and maintained by an annual donation from that fund.)

  1. Head, School of Medicine.
  2. MBBS students.
  3. Best literature review in MBBS2001 in the field of rheumatology.
  4. $200.

McGraw Hill Book Awards - see the School of Medicine Website for further information about this award.
(Established in 1999 and maintained by Mc-Graw-Hill Book Company Australia Pty. Ltd.)
 
The McGraw prize is awarded to the two students who obtain the top two scores in the year 2 examination.

Parke-Davis Prize
(Founded in 1941 and maintained by a fund of $600 established by gifts from Parke-Davis & Company.)

  1. Head, School of Medicine.
  2. First time, year 2 MBBS students who are not in receipt of another prize in the area of pharmacology & therapeutics.
  3. Best literature review in MBBS2001.
  4. Books or instruments.

Pharmacia Australia Pty Limited Prize in Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics
(Founded in 1969 and maintained by an annual grant from Pharmacia & Upjohn Pty Limited.)

  1. Head, School of Medicine.
  2. First time, year 2 MBBS students who are not in receipt of another prize in therapeutics and allied topics.
  3. Best literature review in MBBS2001.
  4. $250 or books to that value.

John Wienholt Memorial Prize in Anatomy and Physiology - see the School of Medicine website for further information about this prize.
(Established in 1937 and maintained until 1953 by annual payments by Mrs Wienholt and thereafter by a bequest by her to the University of $2,000.)

This prize is awarded by the Senate to a year 2 student with the best total score in the Basic and Clinical Sciences Domain in the year 1 and 2 examination.

Alexander and Elizabeth Raff Memorial Scholarship - see the School of Medicine website for further information about this scholarship.
(Founded in 1925 by a gift of $1,000 from Mrs Jessie W. Murphy, daughter of the late Alexander and Elizabeth Raff, who were pioneers of Brisbane.)

 
The Scholarship shall be awarded annually to the second year student of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery program who, obtains the top score in the Year 2 examinations.
 
 
 
Jean and Joyce Stobo Memorial Prize - see the School of Medicine website for further information about this prize.
(Founded in 1956 by the Queensland Medical Women's Society in memory of Drs Jean and Joyce Stobo)
 
This prize is awarded to the female student with the highest overall marks in the year 2 examination.
