E.S. Meyers Lecture 2004 - Dr Robert Gallo

In 2004 the University of Queensland Medical Society was most honoured to host Dr Robert Gallo, M.D. (left) as the guest speaker at the Errol Solomon Meyers Memorial Lecture.

Dr Gallo is one of the co-discoverers of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Throughout his work in the field of virology he also discovered the HTLV-2 and HHV-6 and pioneered research on retroviruses. His most notable work is currently in the field of HIV/AIDS and he has published more than 930 articles over the past two decades. He is the sixth-most cited researher from 1983 - 2002, clocking in more than 61,300 citations within scientific literature.

Dr Gallo is currently the Director of the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Human Virology at the University of Maryland in the United States. His continuing research covers the aspects of Public Health in the field of HIV/AIDS, the possibilities of an HIV vaccine, international efforts to combat the disease and development of new pharmaceutical strategies to attack this disease in the near future. HIV/AIDS has been internationally recognised as the deadliest pandemic in medical history.

Dr Gallo delivered his lecture titled HIV In The Third Decade: Past Lessons and Future Prospects at the UQ Centre on August 19th, 2004 to an audience of more than 1,000. His lecture was well received and was attended by a wide-ranging audience, from researchers in HIV/AIDS and virology, to Medical Practitioners, Academics, Public Health Workers, Allied Health Workers and members of the public. This demonstrates the extensive reach of the disease and its impacts throughout so many areas of health and life. Dr Gallo received media attention during his stay with publicity on a local level in the Courier Mail and on a national level in an interview on the ABC's Health Report.

Dr Gallo was extremely generous throughout his stay in Australia and the University of Queensland Medical Society is humbly gratified to have been given the time and patience of this wonderful man. Many thanks to the staff at the IHV, within the UQMS and School of Medicine, and to our major sponsors for the memorable night - Roche, Gilead, QML and the Hospital Areas Committee. Of course our unending gratitude is extended to Dr Gallo for visiting us, a pleasure we would gladly repeat in the future should the opportunity arise.
