![]() ![]() ![]() | Local Exchange Committee The Local Exchange Committee (LEC) consists of Officers (LEOs) from each medical school. Its members are responsible for promoting the overseas clinical elective exchanges in their medical school, receiving applications for overseas electives from outgoing students, and making accommodation arrangements for incoming overseas medical students for their electives in Australia. The LEC is indebted to Dr Brad Gardiner, the LEO who started the exchange program at UQ in 2002. Please read below for more information, and email the UQMS Secretary if you’re interesting in applying for an elective, becoming involved with IFMSA activities, or becoming part of the Local Exchange Committee. ![]() ![]() ![]() | How does one apply for the IFMSA exchange program? All applications are first considered by the local exchange committee at UQ, who ranks them according to merit. The most suitable 5-10 applicants will be selected. We will also be seeking input from the UQMS and the Medical School on the suitability of applicants. This input may include academic performance, contribution to the school and other criteria, which could include a commitment to host an exchange student in return. Your application should contain:
Please also include a statement of your financial preparedness to go overseas (this has been a major reason for people pulling out of the exchange program at various stages). Ideally the application should be received 6 months before the start of the elective. What are the costs involved? There is a nominal cost associated with the program – it varies but is usually around $400-500. This includes hospital placement, accommodation, and potentially some food and/or “social program” – these variables will vary from country to country. We also hope to organize sponsorship in order to keep costs to the absolute minimum. Students who can host incoming students (if any) in exchange will in return be charged a reduced fee of $100 – note that the incoming overseas student should be provided with a fully furnished room to him/herself. ![]() ![]() ![]() | When can I do an elective through SCOPE? The ideal times to participate in the IFMSA-SCOPE program with the UQ SOM are during the 1st year elective (Nov-Dec) and the 4th year elective (Oct-Nov). It is also possible to arrange an elective during the holiday period; but priority will go to the 1st years and the 4th years. There is a range of 250 member countries of the IFMSA, of which about 80 are actively involved in the exchange program. Australia has signed contracts with the following countries for 2006:
Exchanges to countries other than those signed with Australia can be arranged unilaterally, but you need to contact your local exchange officer well in advance (at least 6 months) to check if it is possible. A complete list of the countries available and the individual exchange conditions for each country is available on the IFMSA website http://www.ifmsa.org/ In 2006 we are sending out 11 students to 7 countries. International Federation of Medical Students' Associations
The IFMSA is the International Federation of Medical
Students' Associations. It was formed after the Second World War in
Europe, by a group of European medical student associations working
together.
UQ successfully sent 2 students in 2002, to Germany and Denmark. We received one Canadian and two Brazilian students in the same year. Besides organising exchanges, IFMSA is also the peak body for medical students around the world, with delegates to the World Health Organisation, Medicens Sans Frontiers, the Red Cross and other major health organisations. Aim The aim of SCOPE is to promote international understanding and co-operation amongst medical students and all health professionals through international exchange of students. Since it’s foundation in 1951, IFMSA has sought to give medical students across the world the opportunity to experience medical training in other countries. Through exchange, students gain invaluable insights into other health systems and cultures, enabling them to view the more familiar environment in their own hospitals and communities with fresh perspectives. The exchange program offers students a unique educational and
cultural experience, as an adjunct to the regular medical curriculum,
helping to broaden students’ understanding of medical and social
conditions in different countries.
