Overview

The University of Queensland Medical Society (UQMS), established in 1936, represents over 1800 medical students and is one of the most successful student organisations in Australia. The UQMS is a student-run, volunteer incorporated association administered by an Executive Committee and Management Committee with the support of many Convenor and Representatives.

Full membership of the UQMS is open to all medical students enrolled at the University of Queensland.

Mission

The UQMS has a mission to enrich the lives of UQ medical students through leadership, advocacy, and community. The objects for which the UQMS was established include:

    1. To effectively represent the interests of University of Queensland medical students.
    2. To foster the development of University of Queensland medical students as leaders in society.
    3. To inspire and encourage University of Queensland medical students to reach their full potential.
  2. Advocacy
    1. To safeguard and promote the interests of University of Queensland medical students.
    2. To protect the rights and responsibilities of University of Queensland medical students.

    3. To support the wellbeing and academic advancement of University of Queensland medical students.
  3. Community
    1. To foster a collaborative and inclusive environment for University of Queensland medical students.
    2. To cultivate medical student engagement within the broader community.

    3. To impart a sense of social responsibility to University of Queensland medical students.

Mascot

The official UQMS Mascot is Ashintosh Macopenjy. The mascot can be seen at all official UQMS meetings. The UQMS motto, displayed under the skull of Ashintosh, is “domine nos dirige”. This is best translated as “God help us” – entirely appropriate.
